The Headies Awards, previously known as the Hip Hop Awards, was inaugurated in 2006 to acknowledge the most incredible achievements in the Nigerian Music Industry for the year by Hip Hop Magazine of Nigeria and its yearly ceremony features performances by acclaimed and upcoming musicians. It's aired live on Hip TV to audiences across the country. The image of the Headies was developed by Ayo Animashaun, the creator of the awards and drawn by Mathias Aragbada. The first Headie plague was done by Jide Adewoye. In 2008, the plague was remade in the United Kingdom and plated with 21 carat gold. The new plague is a combination of resin, copper, steel, marble and gold.
As of 2020, the awards is composed of 25 categories. Two new categories, Songwriter of the Year, a category to recognize the Songwriter, and Alternate Album, is created for the first time for the 2020 event. Open voting decides the majority of the categories except Record of the Year, Rap Album, Vocal Performances Male and Female, Lyricist on the Roll and Best Performer categories. It changed to its current name in 2011.

ALBUM OF THE YEAR
A category that recognizes the best album released by a solo artist or group in the year under review. The inaugural and only group to win this category is P Square for their album Get Squared in 2006. Musicians that won for their debut is Asa (2008), Wande Coal (2010), Kizz Daniel (2016) and Simi (2018). The highest winner in the category is Olamide with three (2013-2015). Other winners include 2face (2011), 9ice (2009), Paul Play (2007) and Falz, the recent recipient (2019). The most nominated musicians in this category is P Square is five and the most nominated without success is Wizkid and M I, both with three.
SONG OF THE YEAR
A category that recognizes the most acclaimed song in the year under review. It's inaugural winner is P Square for their song Bizzy Body in 2006. Most winners in this category is D'Banj and Davido with two wins apiece. Other winners include Olu Maintain, 9ice, Bracket, Ice Prince and Brymo, Kcee, Wizkid, Phyno and Olamide and Burna Boy. No female has won this category. Davido is the most nominated with five followed by P Square and Wizkid with four. 2face is the most nominated without success with three.
NEXT RATED
A category that recognizes the most promising upcoming act in the year under review. Ass became the first winner in 2006. Other winners include Overdose, Wande Coal, Omawumi, Skuki, Wizkid, Davido, Sean Tizzle, Patoranking, Rekado Banks, Mr Eazi, Mayorkun and Rema, the recent winner.
ARTISTE OF THE YEAR
A category that recognizes the most critically and commercially adjudged artiste in the year under review. First presented to P Square in 2006. Wizkid and Davido with two wins are the highest winners. Other winners include 2face, Olamide, 9ice, D'Banj, Wande Coal, Iyanya, Paul Play and Burna Boy. The musicians with the most nominations is Wizkid with eight followed by P Square, D'Banj, Olamide and Davido with six. Most nominations without success is Tiwa Savage with five.
RECORD OF THE YEAR
A category that recognizes the best song for its production and lyrical depth in the year under review. First winner went to Ego in 2006 for her song Never Far Away. Most winners in this category is Timi Dakolo and Darey with two wins. Other winners include Cobhams, Brymo, Asa, Simi, Etcetra, Jaywon, Teni and Paul Play. Most nominations is Brymo and 2face with five followed by Asa, Darey, Timi Dakolo, Bez and Adekunle Gold with three. Most nominations without success is 2face with five.

Best Rap Song
A category that recognizes the best song in the rap genre. Mode 9 became the first winner of this category in 2006. Most wins is M I, Vector and Phyno with two. Other winners include Falz, Olamide, Ice Prince, Terry Tha Rapman and Naeto C. Most nominations is M I, Olamide, Illbliss and Phyno with six nominations. Naeto C, Mode 9, Ice Prince, Reminisce with four. Most nominations without success is Illbliss and Reminisce.
Lyricist on the Roll
A category that presents the rapper with the best lyrical depth and performance on a single song or album in the year under review. Mode 9 became the first winner in 2006. Other winners include Vector, Jesse Jagz, M I, Illbliss and A-Q. Most wins is Mode 9 with seven. Most nominations is Mode 9 with eight followed by M I with six. Boogey is the rapper with the most nominations without success with four.
Best Rap Album
A category that recognizes the best album in the rap genre. Freestyle became the first winner in the category in 2007. Other winners include Olamide with two wins, Reminisce, Illbliss, Ice Prince, Falz, Ruggedman. The highest wins belongs to M I with three. The most nominated is Olamide with six. Most nominated without success is Mode 9 with three.
Best Collaboration
A category that recognizes the best R&B, Pop or Hip Hop collaborative track including cameos. 2shotz and Biglo became the first winner in 2006. Most wins in this category is Phyno, Olamide, Timaya, and Flavour with two. Other winners include Burna Boy, Zlatan, Tiwa Savage, Simi, Falz, Wizkid, Skales, Patoranking, Runtown, Mode 9, 2face, Ruggedman, Dj Jimmy Jatt, J Martins, P Square, Kefee, M I, Sound Sultan and Elajoe. Most nominations is 2face, Wizkid with six. Olamide and Davido follows with five. Most nominations without success is Illbliss with three.
Hip Hop World Revelation
A category that recognizes the best new artiste with a debut album adjudged to be outstanding in terms of artistic quality and impact within the year under review. D'Banj became the first winner in 2006. Other winners include Soul E, 9ice, M I, Wande Coal, Dr Sid, Wizkid, Davido, Kcee, Yemi Alade, Kizz Daniel and Rekado Banks and Mayorkun.
Best Vocal Performance Male
A category that recognizes the individual male artiste with the most outstanding vocal performance on a single song or album. Faze was the inaugural winner in 2006. This category is not open to public voting. Most wins is Timi Dakolo and Praiz with two. Other winners include Banky W, Darey, Wande Coal, 9ice, Obiwon, Capital Femi, Shaydee, Wurld. Most nominees is Wande Coal and Banky W with five followed by Darey, Timi Dakolo and Praiz with four. Most nominees without success is Bez, Johnny Drille and Cobhams with three.
Best Vocal Performance Female
A category that recognizes the individual female artiste with the most outstanding vocal performance on a single song or album. Ego was the first winner in 2006. This category is not open for public voting. Most wins is two for Omawumi. Other winners include Asa, Lara George, Waje, Tiwa Savage, Nikki Laoye, Niyola, Aramide, Simi and Teni. Most nominations belongs to Waje with eight. Followed by Simi with four. Most nominations without success is Eva Alordiah and Seyi Shay with two.
Producer of the Year
A category that recognizes the song or album with the most accomplished production. Don Jazzy became the first winner in 2006. Most wins is Don Jazzy with four. Other winners include Killertunes, Kiddominant, Young John, Legendary Beatz, D Tunes, Tee—Y mix, I D Cabasa, Cobhams. Most nominations is Don Jazzy with six followed by Cobhams with five and Legendary Beatz. Most nominations without success is Spellz, Jesse Jagz and Shizzi with three.
R&B Pop Album
A category that recognizes the best album in the R&B and Pop genre began in 2008 after the merge of both R&B and Pop album. 2face was the first winner in the category. Highest winners is 2face and Wizkid with two. Most nominees is 2face and P Square with four. Most nomination without success is Darey with three. Other winners include P Square, Wande Coal, Sean Tizzle, 9ice, Davido, Kizz Daniel and Mayorkun.
R&B Single
A category that began in 2012 to recognize the best single in the R&B genre. The first winner was May D. Most nominations is Praiz with five. Most nominees is Praiz. Other winners include Banky W, Sean Tizzle, Timi Dakolo, 2face, Simi, Runtown and Sheyi Shay. There's no highest winner in this category.
Pop Single
A category that began in 2010 to recognize the best song in the pop genre. The first winner is Wande Coal. Dr Sid and Iyanya are the highest winners with two. Wizkid has the highest nominations with six followed by Davido with five. Most nominee without success is Wizkid. Other winners include Davido, 2face, The Mavins, Olamide, Teni, Korede Bello, Harry Songz, Orezi and Kcee.
Alternate Song
A category that began in 2012 to recognize the best song in the alternate genre. The first winner is Black Magic. Other winners include BOJ, Adekunle Gold, Bez, Johnny Drille, Aramide, Sound Sultan, Koker. Highest nominee is Adekunle Gold with four. Bruno is the musician with the most nominations without success with two.
Street Hop
A category that recognizes the best street song began in 2008. Olamide is the highest winner with two. Other winners include Dj Zeez, the first winner, Terry G, Chuddy K, Oritse Femi, Small Doctor. Highest nominees without success is Reminisce.
Music Video
A category that began in 2007 to honour the best music video to its director. Jude Okoye became the first winner. Highest winners in this category is Clarence Peters and Jude Okoye with five. The highest nominee is Clarence Peters with twelve followed by Jude Okoye and Meji Alabi with seven. Nominee with the most nominations without success is Meji Alabi. Other winners include Dj Tee and Daps. There was no winner in 2015.
Rookie of the Year
It began in 2015. Ycee, Mayorkun, Teni and Barry Jhay are all recipients in this category.
Best Performer
It began in 2018 with Yemi Alade winning the two awards.
Viewers choice
It began in 2018 with Wizkid and Teni winning the categories.
African Artist of the Year
A category that began in 2007 to recognize the best Non-Nigerian artist. V I from Ghana became the first winner in the category. Sarkodie is the highest winner in this category with three wins. There was no winner in 2010, 2013 and 2016. Other winners include Batham Samini (Ghana 2008), The Dogg (Kenya 2009), Cabo Snopp (Angola 2011) Nasty C (2018 South Africa), King Promise (2019 Ivory Coast). Most wins in this category is Sarkodie with three(2012, 2014, 2015).
