Nigeria has missed a chance of landing an Oscar win after the Academy Awards released the shortlist of its International Feature Film.
Nigeria submitted the critically acclaimed movie, "The Milkmaid" to the Oscar's board for evaluation. However, it's been confirmed that nollywood movie didn't make the cut, and wont be participating alongside other feature films in the 93rd Academy Awards.
The International Film Feature Category is an award category that celebrates movies outside the United States, mainly movies scripted in non-English. This made it possible for Nigeria to submit "The Milkmaid" after it was confirmed that it satisfied all requirements.
The Oscars released the shortlist that contained 15 movies from Chile, Tunisia, Ivory coast, Iran, Mexico, Romania, and Norway. The movies will make it to the next and final round of voting.
African movies that made it to the Oscars are; 'Night of the Kings' (Ivory Coast) and 'The Man Who Sold His Skin' (Tunisia). Board members of the Academy Awards will be invited to screen the final 15 shortlisted movies and vote for the final shortlist.
The Milkmaid is the second Nigerian movie to be submitted to the Oscars, after the Netflix movie, Lionheart.
The main ceremony of the Oscars will be held on Sunday, April 25, 2021 in California.
